Finding a recruiter and agency you trust is so important, and we want you to have all of the information you need to make the decision that is best for you! So, we sat down with GetMed Recruiter, Natasha, to share her expertise after making the switch from being a registered nurse to a nursing recruiter.

Here’s to knowin' all the info for livin’ your best life as a traveler! 👏

Top 10 questions you need to know to kickstart your travel nursing career:

  1. How much experience do you recommend having before becoming a travel nurse?

I would say have at least 2 years of experience in whatever specialty you want to work in – you have to be able to jump right into things without much orientation since you are filling in an open position.

  1. Any advice for new travelers looking into traveling as a profession?

Be open-minded and flexible – Be someone that is always up for a challenge – Find a recruiter that you mesh well with and can trust

  1. Do you have a choice in what city you take an assignment?

Yes and No – again, in the travel market you want to be open and flexible, so the more open you are geographical, the better chances you have at landing an assignment.

  1. When should I reach out to a recruiter if I want to start travel nursing?

Ideally, within 2-3 months of when you want to start traveling – it usually takes a week or two to get your profile built to start submitting you to positions – Once you are being submitted, it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to accept an assignment.

  1. What attracted you to doing travel nurse recruiting at GetMed Staffing?

I was looking for a change & knew I wanted to get out of Nursing – but I had NO idea what to do because all I knew was nursing – After doing some soul searching, I looked at things I did and did not like about my RN supervisor job & noticed I really liked the HR/managing aspect of my job and figured this would be kind of like managing a team still 😊

I did a job shadow with GetMed and absolutely fell in love with the team and the atmosphere – I literally felt right at home walking into my job shadow & could really tell that they lived out their core values as a company.

I didn’t start the job for about 2-3 months after I accepted the position – I was SO impressed with how often my manager followed up with me regularly just to check in and see how things were going & she even wished my luck on my bodybuilding competition that I was doing the Saturday before I started! These types of things are what proved to me that they actually care, and you are family to them!

  1. As a new college grad, do you have any suggestions on getting started as a travel nurse?

Figure out what specialty you want to work in and get experience in that area of expertise – don't be afraid to get involved!

  1. What are the most in-demand, highest-paying specialties right now for open travel jobs?

Right now, it is definitely anything Surgical Services – everywhere is so back-logged on cases from the pandemic so they are needing all the help that they can get. Search our available jobs to find your next travel assignment!

  1. Should I be working with multiple recruiters/agencies to get the best pay?

I would say it’s good to work with a couple of agencies or recruiters – there are so many of us out there and we can’t possibly cover all areas that you want to travel to – so if another agency can get you a contract in a place that we’re not able to, by all means, go for that – we just want the best for you!

  1. How do you negotiate for more money? My recruiter always says, “It’s the best I can do for pay.”

It all boils down to trusting your recruiter – if you have that relationship with your recruiter that you trust that has your best interest in mind, then you shouldn’t have to negotiate for more, they are giving you the most they can.

If you do negotiate and they offer more money, find a different recruiter because they should be giving you the most they can upfront.
