Stunning Summer Assignments for Healthcare Travelers

May 23, 2023

Every traveler has a destination short-list. GetMed would like to help you check a few off in the United States this year. Whether looking for adventure, warmer weather, or a chance to advance your career this summer, these seven locations will provide something for all. To start, we recommend that you are hold a license in multiple states.

Alaska

Choosing to work during the summer doesn't necessarily imply relaxing on the beach under the blazing sun. Alaska offers a more relaxed paradise, with extraordinary views and temperatures around 60-80 degrees.

The state is full of natural wonders, including legendary wildlife, spectacular mountain vistas, icy blue glaciers, and more. One of the most popular attractions is Denali National Park, home to the tallest mountain in North America, Mount Denali. For those looking for more urban activities, Anchorage has many cultural attractions.

California

California is a great location year-round with its alluring beaches, theme parks, and forests. However, it can be an especially beneficial location for travelers looking to enjoy great weather and expand their resumes. California is home to many prestigious facilities, including UCSF Medical Center and John Muir Health-Walnut Creek Medical Center in the Bay area.

Because of the high demand, California boasts some of the most competitive wages for travelers. However, keeping the cost of living and taxes in mind is essential as these can affect the overall take-home pay.

Texas

Texas is a massive state with plenty to offer. Whether you're into hiking, fishing, or exploring large cities like Austin or San Antonio, you'll be sure to find something to do. According to US News, Texas is also home to nine nationally ranked hospitals and 35 others that meet national high-performing standards. This, combined with the competitive pay rates and lower cost of living in many parts of the state, can make for a great financial opportunity.

North Carolina

North Carolina is home to the Great Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains, and a stunning coastline. For travelers that want to avoid harsh weather extremes, North Carolina offers a welcome respite any time of year, whether they’re looking to hike, bike, tour a lighthouse, or relax on a beach. Summer in North Carolina also provides abundant can’t-miss food and music festivals.

West Virginia

Looking for more fresh air and less urban living? The Mountain State can make a lovely summer destination. In addition to hiking and biking, West Virginia offers a range of other outdoor activities during the summer months, such as hot springs, fishing, and golfing.

If you've been on a work trip in West Virginia, you likely know it has excellent whitewater rafting. West Virginia also has a lower cost of living than many other states, benefitting healthcare travelers looking to save money on expenses such as housing.

Maine

Maine ranks the best state for nurses. Maine offers a variety of large-city attractions with a small coastal town charm. For example, travelers can enjoy the breathtaking yet solitary rugged coast around Acadia National Park and Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, or several bustling major music festivals, the Maine Lobster Festival, and the Boothbay Harbor Festival.

New Mexico

New Mexico is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including national parks, forests, and deserts. Summer is a great time to visit outdoor places like White Sands National Park, Bandelier National Monument, and the Gila Wilderness. Also, unlike many other parts of the country, New Mexico has a dry climate during the summer months. This makes it ideal for prolonged outdoor activities like hiking and camping.

New Mexico also has a rich cultural history and is home to many unique festivals and events during the summer. For example, there's the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow, and the Roswell UFO Festival.

How to prepare for your summer assignment as a healthcare traveler

In general, travelers should do a few things to ensure they’re ready for their assignment, no matter the season.

  • Research the Location: Before leaving, research where you'll work and live. Check out local attractions, popular restaurants, and outdoor activities. Knowing what's available will help you plan your free time and maximize your experience.
  • Pack Your Necessities: Depending on your destination, you'll need to pack differently for a summer assignment. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing and plenty of sunscreens if headed to a warm climate.
  • Consider Housing: There are many options for short-term living arrangements for travelers. Apps like Furnished Finder can help you find what fits your needs best. If you're traveling with family, consider renting a house or apartment. Whatever you decide, make sure you book your accommodation well in advance.
  • Transportation Costs: If you're flying to your assignment, book your flights and arrange for transportation from the airport. If you're driving, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and plan your route ahead of time. Make sure you have enough money set aside to accommodate getting to your assignment.
  • Get Your Paperwork in Order: Make sure all your paperwork is in order well in advance of your start date. This includes your nursing license, certifications, and other necessary documents. Keep copies of everything digitally and physically.

GetMed’s bonus summer assignment tip for new travelers

Texas, Maine, New Mexico, North Carolina, and West Virginia are part of the Nurse Licensure Compact. You can work in these states without jumping through additional hoops if you have a nursing license from a compact state. This is helpful for all healthcare travelers but particularly beneficial for newer travel nurses. The initial leap into travel nursing can be overwhelming, and a compact nursing license can help get travelers confidently started.
